Kubama College

Teaching and learning together through knowledge and skill building

Introducing new and digital content, creative and practical teaching materials to enrich existing curricula
Project Impact: reaching approximately 600 pupils and 30 teachers, concrete collaboration with teachers of mathematics, science and French, access to over 2,000 new books (and over 2,000 e-books) in the restocked library, to digital teaching and a new IT room (40 laptops)

Supporting teachers and pupils with digital content and IT

Supporting teachers at the Jesuit School Collège Kubama in French and mathematics by providing IT equipment and accessories (laptops, projector, internet access) and video meetings with mentors in Belgium to discuss teaching needs and share teaching methods; access to new and digital learning resources to prepare lessons using PowerPoint and project digital content in class.

Our objectives:

  • Defining learning needs together, taking into account local resources and circumstances
  • Engaging subject specialists volunteers in the North to mentor our teachers
  • Enriching existing high-quality teaching programmes with new content and learning materials
  • Evaluating our supporting role using specific metrics and benchmarks

Library restocking

Renovation and expansion of the French library at Collège Kubama; book collection began in spring 2022 and we now have over 2,000 books for all ages.

The collection in Belgium continues to grow thanks to various generous donors and diligent book collectors, for whom we are extremely grateful! During our missions to Kisantu, we have witnessed the pupils’ enthusiasm for reading.

A digital lending system using barcodes for each book has been set up, and more than 2,000 e-books are available on desktops in the library and now also on a dozen e-readers!

Gradually, we want to make the library accessible to more and more readers outside the Jesuit school; in agreement with the school management, we now have a membership card system in place to make visits run smoothly. Everyone wants to read… what a pleasure to see!

Starting soon... .re-equipping chemistry, biology and physics laboratories

The school recently built a three-room building to house the physics, biology and chemistry laboratories. However, these laboratories are currently minimally equipped; the instruments available are outdated, often no longer operational and therefore no longer suitable for providing good science education.

As a result, the school’s final-year students are missing out on the opportunity to achieve good results in their final state examinations and to pursue further studies in science or STEM subjects.

That is why, with this project, we want to re-equip Collège Kubama’s school laboratories over the next two school years (2025-2026 and 2026-2027) by purchasing and providing adequate scientific equipment for the three laboratories.

With the renewed practical teaching, based on the theories taught in the school curriculum, we can make science “visible” and “observable” and make connections with real-life situations and applications.

Thanks to this project, the school can offer appropriate, high-quality science education to

  • Secondary school pupils at Collège Kubama and pupils studying science at other schools in Kisantu, who will have regular access to the three laboratories.
  •  Biology, Chemistry and Physics teachers at Collège Kubama and       other schools in Kisantu.
  •  And more specifically, finalists in the science final during the   traditional state examination session at both Collège Kubama and     other schools in Kisantu.

The school will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026. In addition to the new building for the laboratories, they are working on further improving the educational environment, including repairing the old school building and the space for cultural activities, building a fence around the boarding school to ensure the safety of the boarding students, drilling a well to supply drinking water to the boarding school students, and building a primary school to provide urgent access to basic education for the many children in Kisantu who are not attending school.
